A wooden knife may well be suitable for cutting bread and some other products. But it is desirable to use solid wood. Ordinary hornbeam, beech or even more so - pine for this will not work. Representatives of the so-called "iron trees" are needed here.
To make a large knife from a tree for cutting bread and other soft foods, you can use, for example, Brazilian cherries, Schmidt birch, ebony, amaranth or a backout.
We take a suitable wooden plank with a thickness of 4-5 mm, and with a pencil we draw a template for the future knife on the surface. We cut the workpiece on a band saw, after which we grind a wooden knife on a grinding machine or grinder.
The main stages of work
After polishing the surface of the tree, we make the blade descents - in general, we perform similar operations as in the manufacture of a conventional metal knife. The final “sharpening” is done already with the help of fine-grained sandpaper.
Then we cut out two wooden pads for the handle. Since the knife’s “body” itself is dark, it’s better to use light wood for overlays: maple, ash, hornbeam and others. We glue the cut-outs on the band saw using ordinary wood glue.
At the last stage of work, we bring the shape of the handle to the belt grinding machine, and then with the help of a round file we make the teeth on the knife blade.
The surface of the knife is covered with mineral oil. You can see the detailed process of making a large knife from a tree for cutting bread in the video on the website.
