How to make pillow applications

Cushions are not only a wonderful decoration of the interior, but also useful things in the house. And I really like to sew sofa cushions. I take different fabrics for sewing them (curtain silk, tapestry, calico), but I prefer the dense fabric used for upholstery. I buy this fabric in a special store. They often also sell a flap, which is much cheaper. Sometimes I take samples that are generally given for a penny.

When the fabric comes in plain, without a pattern, I decorate pillows with applications. I just love to do them. To make an application, you need very few materials and tools:
  • pieces of fabric;
  • paper for drawing;
  • cardboard for stencil (if you need a stencil);
  • pen or pencil;
  • marker (not always);
  • scissors;
  • glue stick;
  • sewing threads;
  • sewing machine.

For the embodiment of the drawing I take a flock. This fabric is special. It is colorful, beautiful and, most importantly, not loose. The edges of the parts of the appliqué do not get wet even when washing.
I make pillows with applications for gifts. I select the picture itself depending on the event. It can be:
  • Children's drawings;
  • horoscope signs (zodiac or eastern);
  • Names
  • mi-bears;
  • hearts
  • butterflies ...

Time for making a simple drawing needs less, but the application of a large number of parts of different colors looks more masterpiece and causes more delight.
I find drawings for my applications in the public domain on the Internet, print them out on plain paper, increase or decrease using standard computer programs.
I cut out the picture, divide it into parts and select the flock by color for each element.

If I intend to use the drawing several times, I make a stencil from it: I paste the details onto cardboard and cut it out.

According to the resulting patterns, I cut out the details of the appliqué, having previously outlined each on the wrong side of the fabric. Scissors for application should be sharp and not “chew” the material so that the edges of the details of the picture are clear.
After cutting out all the blanks of the picture, I lay out the application on the fabric prepared for the pillow in order to determine the optimal position. I fit the parts with each other, cutting off the excess, if they are not quite tightly connected.

Having determined the position of the picture, I start to sew on the parts in turn, starting with the central or largest. I pre-fix the elements with glue-pencil: I smear the wrong side and firmly press it. It is not forbidden to use a cold iron for pressing.
I sew the application with the usual line on the typewriter. During sewing, I make sure that the part does not move from its place, sewn without folds and wrinkles.
When all parts of the picture are sewn, I draw a marker with some small details. The marker does not get dirty, but it does, however, disappear. And what prevents to draw everything again?
When the application is completely ready and looks good, I proceed to the further manufacture of the pillow. I sew the pillowcase, embroidering the lock, stuff the filler into it. To fill the pillowcase, I cut the foam into small cubes or use a ready-made filler: holofiber, synthetic winterizer, synthetic winterizer.
So quickly and simply you can decorate a boring pillow. A joyful pillow brings joy not only to children, but also to adults, believe me.
