If your car’s old steering rack is lying around in your garage, cottage or workshop, use it to make homemade tools. For example, it will make a good nail gun, which is definitely useful on the farm, even though the nails are used less and less today.

To make such a nail clipper, you only need the steel shaft of the steering rack, which consists of a gear part and a rod. Accordingly, you must first disassemble the housing and remove the shaft, after which you can proceed to subsequent operations on processing the workpiece - and it is desirable to have at least some skills in performing blacksmithing.

The main stages of work

The end of the steering rack shaft (from the stem side) is heated in a forge furnace (or gas furnace), after which, with the help of a sledge hammer, we expand it a little and flatten it on the anvil. Next, with the help of a chisel, we form a small wedge-shaped groove to grab and tear off nails from wooden boards.

At the next stage, using a simple home-made device, we bend the “head” of the nail gun itself. Moreover, please note that the workpiece must be heated red-hot - it will not work to “bend cold”.

The serrated surface in the upper part of the nail puller does not fulfill any important function, but simply decorates the tool. For a step-by-step process of making a nail clipper from a steel shaft of the steering rack of a car, see the video on the website.
